Wyatt stood at the tripod base, the earthy scent of crushed grass mixing with the sharp tang of poster paint that drifted from the dripping hole. An adult—Dean—knelt nearby, stirring fresh yellow at the mixing area, his hands smelling of mild soap and vinegar-soaked water. Wyatt listened for the regular creak at each apex; instead he heard a low scrape as the cup dipped too far and dragged a wet shiny green stripe across the nearly dry rings. The string had been soaked by earlier swings and now stretched, lowering the load. Knees pressing into sweet-smelling turf, Wyatt pinched the soggy knot and twisted it tighter, expecting the pendulum to rise just enough to clear the sheet.

The next swings began, and a fresh small ribbon of blue carried a faint iodine whiff, like a distant sardine tin. For three passes the pattern held; if wind rose, the softened string suddenly slipped slightly lower again. The bottle brushed the paper, leaving a curved smear whose edges formed threads as thin as a barbel. Wyatt shifted his grip, squeezed warmed paint off his fingertips, and chose a thin, dry twig among anchoring stones. He looped the twig under the knot as a tiny splint rather than twisting the fibres harder. When he nudged the bottle aside, the smear he had feared looked like a broad butterfly among tight rings. Nearby, new blue arcs hinted at a swift sardine shoal moving across the bright centre of the sheet. Satisfied, Wyatt nudged the knot upward with the twig, noticing the twine that had been straw now wore an emerald ring.
