Only two flat shale pieces remained in Wyatt's tray, their chipped edges grinding softly as he lifted them. A notebook lay open beside his cousin Bram, who kept sketching wildflowers on the higher bank while sunlight flickered across the wide, blue-grey shallows upstream. Wyatt had already stacked a dozen slabs across the creek bed; now a pale block, smoother than the others, occupied the narrow gap between the two fixed boulders. His perception of the opening’s width shifted when he crouched lower, and the water’s hiss grew sharper. The moment he eased one shale piece into place, the current rolled it free and sent it tumbling downstream. Water showed its resilience, sliding around every barrier, and a thin rivulet was being diverted around the left edge, sparkling like a silver thread.

He pressed the pale block deeper for extra stability, but the leak widened instead of closing. If the gap stayed open, the pool would never deepen, so he stood, wiped his wet palms on his boots, and climbed toward the shale outcrop. There, wedged in a crack, waited more slabs plus a chunk that looked identical to the pale block. When he tilted that new piece into the shifting light, fine root fibers clung to its underside; it was not limestone at all but dried clay hardened by the sun. Realising the first block shared that origin, he returned, scooped sticky clay from the bank, and packed it around both pieces. The clay blurred under the water yet clung long enough for stones to pinch it tight. Upstream, the surface rose a finger’s breadth, and the rivulet thinned until only a faint shine slipped over the top. By evening, the upstream pool lay smooth, one broad sheet of steel-grey glass. The small clay-backed wedge still bridged the gap, and a thin rivulet gleamed along its edge. A water strider skimmed across the glassy pool.

安定させようと淡い塊を深く押し込んでも漏れは広がる。隙間が開いたままでは上流の水面が高くならない。彼は立ち上がり濡れた手をブーツで拭い、頁岩の露頭へ登った。割れ目には追加の石板と先ほどの塊にそっくりな欠片が挟まっていた。光を当ててみると裏面に細い根が絡みつき、石灰岩ではなく日差しで硬化した乾いた粘土だとわかった。最初の塊も同じだと気づき、彼は土手の粘土をすくい、両方の塊の周りに押し込んだ。粘土は水の下でかすみながらも石に挟まれて十分に持ちこたえた。上流の水面は指一本分高くなり、支流は光る筋へと細くなった。夕方には上流の水面が鋼色の平らな一枚のガラスのように静まり、粘土を背負った小さな楔はまだ隙間を塞いでいた。かすかな光だけがその縁を流れ、ガラスのような水面をアメンボが滑り去った。
