The hook beside the paste jar showed a pale stripe where the last pair of rounded scissors once hung. Nadia lifted a coil of silver wire to check beneath, then glanced along the craft table. A waiting sparrow perched on the frame of a low lantern stand, its head tilting toward crumbs on the ground. With no scissors, Nadia pressed a strip of verdant tissue against the fish-shaped frame she and Uma had built. The tissue folded over the wire easily, leaving a delicate seam that caught the cool glow from the overhead bulbs. Uma turned the dowel slowly so the paper skin could dry, and the tapir silhouette they had pasted on the side already looked like a tiny passenger swimming beside the fins.

As they carried the fresh lantern toward the winding path, dusk pressed in. At first silver light still slipped through the leaves, and rows of round globes lit the ground only as decoration. Minutes later, their glow was the path itself, blue-grey shadows overlapping like shallow water. The sparrow fluttered ahead, skimming a low branch that curved above the narrowest stretch; it probed the branch foot as though testing a possible nesting site, then darted off again. Nadia watched the sky darken; the battery inside their lantern flickered when a breeze swayed the frame, and each flick left half the fish dim. The crowd around the hanging display grove thickened, shoulders brushing, lanterns bumping. She had planned to slip through, hang the lantern high, and wait for music to start, yet space was thinning as quickly as daylight.

Rather than force her way forward, she stopped beside the reflection pond where only muted chatter drifted over the water. Uma steadied the lantern while Nadia pinched the loose contact; the light steadied but she noticed it might fade again before long. She lowered her plan and chose a smooth alder root near the pond edge. They fixed the dowel between two stones, letting the fish glow at knee height instead of high among the stars. Rippled mirror images multiplied its silver scales, and the tapir shape glimmered in each wave. Up in the branches, the sparrow landed once more, wings folded, while distant music rose behind the trees. Leaves shifted across the pond surface, carrying faint blue reflections farther down the path.
