English 原文
A folded charity leaflet, a chipped ceramic mug, and a threadbare towel sat on the sill below the rain-blurred window. The leaflet had been tucked beneath the mug to stop it sliding. Cool light from the overcast sky met the warm lamp behind her, tinting the fog with a faint violet cast. Rain had been falling since dawn, and soft radiator warmth kept the indoor air humid. Olive pressed her fingertip against the lower pane, carving an elaborate lighthouse through the fog. Each clear stroke exposed a band of slate-blue street beyond the glass. Nimbus the grey cat balanced beside the mug, tail flicking, eyes following every line. Halfway through the tiny balcony rail, a narrow drip gathered at the top edge and slid downward. The bead lengthened, touched the lighthouse roof, and instantly smeared the fresh line into a crooked blur. Olive hurried, trying to rescue the shape by chasing the water with quick circles. The streak only widened, and smaller droplets sprayed outward like unplanned fireworks.
The widening trail hit the frame edge and gathered pace. It dripped onto the towel—a bargain from a street stall, already thin but still thirsty. Water darkened a patch and crept along the fibers before meeting the cup of tea. Heat from the cup pushed a thin plume of steam upward, instantly re-fogging a circle across the lighthouse windows. Nimbus leaned forward as if ready to dive into that misty portal. His cautious negotiation of the slippery sill ended with a single pawprint on the glass and another smear across the drawing. Olive paused. She folded the towel twice. Then she wedged its edge against the pane, building a soft dam that drank each trickle before it could race downward. The cat stepped back, tail swaying. Under the sill, the drainpipe kept gurgling, water rushing unseen toward the street.
