Balance From a Sliding Stone-

English 原文
A blue spiral already curved across the left half of the paper, while the paint-filled bottle swung forward on its rough string. Warm droplets spattered, leaving smooth, dark commas on the white half. Lyle stood in the push-and-release zone; his palm still tingled from the earlier shove. The corner had been held steady by a round stone, yet during his observation the stone slid over the slick sheet. Its weight pressed a dent, blocking the bottle’s narrow path and splashing colour against his shoes. If the stone had stayed on the grass, the swing would have remained smooth. He tried to nudge the stone with the edge of his sandal, yet the painted surface felt as slippery as soap, and the stone only rolled farther, making the curve break. Paint had gathered around the tiny hole in the cap, forming a sticky ring that glimmered like syrup under the sun.
Before he could reach again, a gust bent the swinging line sideways; the bottle bumped the wandering stone, then knocked against a tripod leg. The sudden hit tipped that leg into the soft ground, and the whole frame sagged so the bottle scraped the paper, smearing the fresh arc into a heavy blur. A pressed fern from Lyle’s herbarium clung to his sock, dragging against his skin as he stepped back. Margot, the linguist mixing violet paint near the cups, glanced up but kept stirring. The tripod creaked; if the lean grew, the remaining paint would pour like a flood. Lyle crouched, noticing the same stone’s gritty surface: its weight had caused trouble, yet its flat side felt perfect for wedging. He gripped the damp stone, slid it under the sinking leg, and the downward motion stopped with a muffled crunch.
The frame stood level again; each new swing turned into a clean translation of movement into widening teal rings. A sweet hint of jasmine drifted from a nearby hedge, carried by calmer air, while the paper warmed under steady light. After two more colours, Lyle packed his brushes, the flattened stone remaining where it supported the tripod.
Hours later, evening shade lay across the garden. Dry paint sat in raised ridges; the bottle hung motionless above the centred pattern, its outer skin stiff with layered drips. The tripod stayed tilted ever so slightly against the stone wedge, but nothing shifted on the cooled ground.
