At first, many candidates lay exposed in steady light, yet each new layer revealed bumps that rocked gently under increasing weight. Twice, a sudden gust rolled over the open spot, and the top stone leaned, hesitated, then slipped, scattering glare as it tumbled. While collecting fallen pieces, she saw only three truly flat stones remaining; everything else sat uneven or glistened with damp moss. Greer had planned five layers, but the shrinking supply prompted her to aim instead for a balanced three. She turned resourceful, testing orientation on her palm, rotating each stone until gravity hushed and the silhouette kept straight. After several tries, her hands developed a quiet knack for sensing hidden ridges before the stone even left the ground. A pebble, nudged by her shoe, tapped the base, bounced back, and vanished into pooled darkness without shaking the tower.

The final placement required patience; she waited through one long silent gap between gusts, then lowered the third layer without a sound. A narrow beam of brightness slid across the stones, showing how their faces aligned into a neat rising spiral. Greer straightened, brushed dust from her knees, and stepped back while her smaller tower stood firm against the shifting light.
