A smooth oval patch of pale dust interrupted the neat row where Ivy expected another flat stone. She crouched, brushed the void with her thumb, then scanned the gravel to discover the runaway piece beside her heel. The stone, damp from a recent wave, felt cool and surprisingly heavy, its underside polished smoother than soap. Ivy set it aside for a possible capstone and reached for a drier base stone from the wind-exposed pile. Her goal was simple: raise a fresh stack beside the colorful columns whose aesthetic balance still surprised her. She had balanced four levels when the first hint of trouble arrived as a boisterous gust funneled across the open water. Loose gravel under her shoes shifted with a gritty sigh each time she adjusted her weight. The breeze shook loose a grain or two, but nothing shifted, so she added a fifth piece shaped like a tiny elephant.

Heat inside the dark boulder met the chilly gust, and a narrow updraft slid beneath the elephant stone. The small shape teetered, nudged a nearby tower, and three loose pebbles tumbled toward Ivy’s stacked base. Caught in the thick of it, she braced her palm against gravel, stopping the loose pieces before they struck the foundation. Yet the disturbance had weakened a hidden ridge, and the whole tower began a slow, silent lean toward the waterline. Ivy needed weight above, so she hurried to the water’s edge and lifted a wet slab streaked with algae. The slab’s damp surface clung to her fingers, granting extra grip as she eased it onto the wobbling summit.

A stronger gust arrived from upriver, but the heavier crown only shifted a fraction, and the cascade stopped spreading. Downstream, Bram’s skipped stones pattered on the water, their echoes marking time while Ivy inspected each layer without touching the tower again. A faint ribbon of warm air kept rising along the boulder’s face and brushed the side of her wrist.

上游又刮來一陣強風，但厚重的新頂石只微微晃動，連鎖反應就此止住。下游的布萊姆持續打水漂，水面回響聲為艾薇檢視每層石頭的動作標出節奏，她再也不碰石塔。巨石表面升起的暖氣流仍輕輕竄升，掠過她手腕的側面。
