English 原文
"Sky bit here," Clara called.
Pierce pushed his chair back; the wooden legs gave a short groan as he leaned over the felt. The air around the table tasted of warm cardboard, a mix of faint sugar from sliced figs and the dusty tang rising each time a loose piece slid across the mat. Several border strips had been overcome earlier; their papery smell now blended with a sharper glue note clinging to Pierce’s fingertips. He, a quiet historian, preferred corner fragments coloured like old stone courtyards, while Clara shaped a meadow of bright greens. Trays on the side table still breathed a flour-dry scent from this morning’s culinary challenge—fig pastry had been left to cool, and the syrup clung to the nearest tray. A single piece rocked under Clara’s finger; its thicker card hinted at an impostor from another box.
A sudden hiss came from the open window. The neighbour’s ginger cat, lured by that sticky fig aroma, leapt in from the courtyard and landed between trays. Pierce had been rinsing his hands at the sink; he hurried back, but the cat’s tail had already swept a small cluster toward the felt’s edge. Three pieces slipped free, one sliding onto the carpet. Sweet smell followed them, a light trail the cat’s whiskers still searched for. Clara guided the animal out, then stooped to pick up the fallen piece; sugary glaze on its front now mixed with the carpet’s bitter dust. While she knelt, a thin line of ants rose through a floorboard crack, exploring the syrup dot—tiny bodies giving the cardboard a restless twitch but shifting nothing more.
Clara placed an up-turned bowl over the fig plate, sealing most of the scent, and nudged the trays farther from the window. Ants scattered back through the crack, and the cat paced outside, unable to re-enter. She pressed the rocking impostor piece flat once again, judged its wrong thickness by touch, and moved it to the ambiguous tray. A faint ribbon of syrup-and-cardboard fragrance drifted above the lamp’s amber circle and curved toward the cooler edge of the table.
