English 原文
Olive lifted the first jar expecting its lid beneath, yet the circular space on the counter showed only a syrup-dark outline. She leaned over the jar station, nose catching the sharp berry-citrus vapour drifting from the simmering kettle while her fingers searched along the sticky wood. A soft breeze slipped through the cracked window and carried the mellow sweetness of a half-eaten watermelon waiting on the prep board. Olive’s obsessive habit of lining every lid in strict order urged her to continue the hunt; she dipped to the floor mat and found nothing except the damp, algae-rich smell rising from the garden spade propped near the door, soil still clinging after work beside the backyard wetland. When she straightened, an inquisitive tabby padded across the counter, tongue flicking at a ruby bead of jam cooling on the testing plate. The cat’s sudden sneeze sprayed sugar droplets and sent the missing lid spinning toward the window ledge.
The lid struck the wooden frame with a dull ring, and the noise startled a sparrow perched on the sill; the bird burst upward, wingbeats stirring a lime-sweet gust that flipped the recipe card into the steam column. Paper sagged in the damp heat, threatening to slump toward the kettle. Olive had placed the card there moments before, and she reacted fast, sliding the window shut so the sparrow could no longer flutter inside. As the glass met the frame, the steam bent away and the card drifted safely onto the counter, its surface already speckled with vinegar mist. Meanwhile, the cat, alarmed by the clatter, hopped down, tail swiping a row of metal lids. One lid had been wedged beneath the mat earlier and stayed put, but the others rolled in widening arcs; momentum slowed when they crossed a puddle of cooled foam near the drip tray, the viscous layer grabbing their rims and holding them just short of the stove edge. Olive gathered the lids, wiping them on a cloth. The sticky ring that had framed the empty spot now shimmered with fresh jam, and a small lid kept circling lazily within the glaze.
