The wedge felt dry and grainy, like the cool hearthstone bordering the fireplace behind them. An elbow tube had been taped above the sharp turn earlier, yet vibration loosened it. A loose block then caught his eye; he swapped it for a thicker one, feeling carpet fibers compress under the added weight. If the pail tipped, marbles would scatter across the room, so he nudged it behind a hardcover for safety. None of these chores mentioned the silent tube that still held the stranded marble.

A footstep from the hallway sent a tremor through the carpet, and the wedge, forgotten beside a roll of tape, slid over the book until it tapped Kit’s knee. He lifted it. This time he squeezed the cardboard rim of the sagging tube, drove the wedge in deeper, and aimed it toward the book’s spine instead of the glossy face. The tube bowed a fraction, then held; the marble continued and clattered into the landing bowl. Kit clapped once and followed Tamsin toward the kitchen. Hours later, lamplight lay across the empty floor. The wedge still hugged the tube’s underside, and a faint groove showed where its edge had bitten the cardboard. A single marble reflected gold inside the bowl.
