English 原文
"Blade lies flat, water hugs its edge."
Max set the scissors on the whetstone, and vivid amber light slipped through the awning seams onto the bench. A bright dialogue of cicadas fluttered beyond the herb bed while a sparrow tilted on the fence, tracking every stroke. Sun warmed the stone so quickly that the thin film of water retreated toward the trough’s corners. The hiss of metal shortened; friction raised a faint warmth along the handles. Max had already brought one ladle from the bucket, yet the moisture was disappearing. He crossed the four steps again, ladle steady like a navigator guiding a narrow boat beside a quay of hanging tools. One fresh scoop splashed over the stone, but the sound sharpened only for a moment before fading into the same dry scrape.
The second trip left another shallow pool. Slurry thinned, then thickened as heat returned, and the sparrow flicked its tail at the shifting rhythm. Max noticed steam beads forming at the centre; if the water stayed warm, it would evaporate again and foster even harsher friction. He fetched a third ladle. When the cooler water touched the overheated surface, a clouded skin lifted, and for a single second the whole stone darkened to charcoal. The sudden temperature drop made the hidden grain crack flex; the blade jumped sideways and tapped the trough. That jolt travelled through the wooden bench, nudging a neighbour’s pruning shears that had been balanced near the lip. The shears crept forward, millimetre by millimetre. Max reached out and hooked their ring under a sturdier peg before gravity could finish the slide, ending the tiny march.
With the cascade checked, the stone stayed moist, the hiss calmed into a low whisper, and the edge thinned until it showed only a hair-slim silver line. A test curl lifted from the pine block, yet a faint catch revealed the earlier nick. Max placed the scissors aside to cool, brushed the stone lightly, and stepped back. Grey slurry streaks glistened along the trough, and a final bead crawled toward the drain groove.
