Each diligent stroke thinned the milky slurry, yet the stone’s pores were slowly clogged by the gritty paste. A metal tumbler of tepid bucket water gave off a faint metallic tang four steps away, reminding Nina that the endeavor stole moisture from both blade and stone. She lightened her pressure for a follow-up pass; the hiss turned into a lower whisper, and the neighbour’s pruning shears shivered on their hook, inching closer to the bench edge.

A sudden clatter burst past the herb bed: a cat had brushed the intern’s stack, sending three pots rolling across the gravel. Nina placed the scissors on the wet stone and hurried to stop the pottery parade, catching a pungent waft of crushed basil as she knelt. By the time the last pot was upright, the noise had faded and Jonas had resumed coiling hose. Nina stepped back under the canvas. During her absence, vibration had nudged the pruning shears against the tumbler; the steel knocked the cup sideways, and sun-warmed water had splashed onto the drying cloth. The damp cloth, now heavier and smelling slightly oily, had slid over the whetstone and left half the surface glazed in a sticky grey skin. Nina wedged the pine testing block against the restless shears, halting any further creep. Short, almost silent strokes removed the dull band until the edge vanished into a hair-thin silver line. A cool mineral tang drifted upward, spiraling over the bench in the moving air.
