English 原文
A pale rectangle of wiped glass marked the lower pane where Niall’s earlier sketch had vanished during lunch. He pressed his palm against the cool surface, searching for any tiny ridge of moisture that might hint at the lost lines. Rain tapped outside like fingers on a wooden instrument, steady then quick, while Nolan knelt nearby arranging toy cars on the rug. He pictured the scene in two layers, each depending on the other for balance on the slippery glass. An arch of old stone tangled with ivy would rise above, while a small vessel drifted through the narrow glen below. The upper pane still held a thin fog, so he lifted a finger and traced the first block of the arch. Each stroke cleared a path of grey film and left beads gathering along the edges. He had already rehearsed the design on scrap paper resting on the sill.
As the arch gained shape, a fat drop formed at the frame and slid straight across the keystone, smearing his freshest curve. Niall leaned closer, angled his wrist, and pressed lightly to spread the blur into shaded stone, turning the accident into depth. The adjustment saved the arch, yet his breath clouded the lower pane; within seconds, mist swallowed the outline of the vessel. When he finally leaned back again, the hull below looked completely drowned beneath the spreading white fog. Over the afternoon, several unforeseen circumstances kept removing details faster than he could replace them. The hanging curtain grazed the frame, tea steam rose beside his elbow, and that single drip insisted on returning. By then, even the finest crosshatching near the keystone had been gradually softened into a row of pale ghosts. If he moved too quickly, the cold glass squeaked and carved unwanted scars across the scene.
He exhaled slowly, pivoted his stance, and used the edge of his sleeve to lift just enough moisture from the lower pane. The cloth erased part of the fog but also wiped a strip of the hull. He redrew the waterline with shorter, firmer taps before the dripping beads could reach it. Now the arch above leaned slightly asymmetrical; the boat below bore a bold, simple prow, yet both survived. Niall stepped back slowly while Nolan rose onto his small knees beside the wide sill. The older boy traced the uneven stones overhead, and the younger followed the bright hull underneath. Two sets of fingertips glimmered on the glass, each resting on a different half of the picture. Between them, fresh droplets slipped steadily downward, quietly dragging thin silver trails through both imperfect drawings.
