English 原文
Orange dust hung near the board; Griffon’s wrist already swept a broad arc under the shelter when Zeke arrived. He had pictured adding a sunrise, yet the upper half looked nearly full of Griffon’s beach scene. The lower section, dotted with damp patches, caught warm gold light and reflected dull ripples from puddles on the pavement. Beside the chalk ledge a plastic box waited, its clasp stiff, and both children eyed the last long stick of red. Griffon lifted the stick but offered a quick half-smile, sliding it back so it balanced between them. A faint drizzle started again, tapping the exposed board and making small cold freckles across the green surface.
Zeke chose an orange stub and sketched a platter loaded with chalk strawberries. Water streaked through the fruit and turned them pale. Beside it he drew a small cutting board and a sliced melon. A treat shaped like a cookie sat nearby, while a rubber band curled like a forgotten napkin ring. Griffon continued above, filling in a tall lifeguard tower, tilting his head to match the upper dryness of the surface. The single red stick had been pressed too hard; it snapped, shot off the ledge, and plopped into a puddle. Both children flinched, then Griffon crouched to rescue the piece, but chalk dust merged with water and left a cloudy swirl. If the drizzle paused, they could still share the shorter halves without losing the bright tone.
Minutes later sunlight warmed the bolts behind the board. The sheet tipped forward a hair, and several chalk stubs began to roll. Zeke caught one piece while Griffon steadied the ledge with a flat palm; their elbows crossed, but neither spoke. When the small tremor stopped, they swapped places in silence, working in short bursts while drizzle flickered on and off. Each waited while the other finished a stroke before adding the next line, so colours stayed clear despite the damp boundary. They had completed two connected pictures—a tower above and a picnic below—when sunlight slid under the awning and deepened every warm outline. At the same moment, near the benches beyond the fence, a forgotten red ripple drifted across a puddle. Wind skimmed the water and spread thin color rings outward.
