The cardboard back of a puzzle piece felt rough against Margot’s thumb, warmer than the printed surface. She noticed three meadow pieces nearby showing identical fence posts angling left, a repeating rhythm across the green scatter. Amber light from the pendant lamp lay across the felt like thin syrup, leaving the table edges in cooler shadow where York worked on the sky. A faint papery undertone rose each time his section shifted, while the hallway clock ticked on the beat. Margot slid the fence-pattern pieces toward her corner, their tiny tabs brushing the mat without a sound, and the growing border between the two sections narrowed another finger’s width.

Some greens had been grouped by shade earlier, yet the fence still lacked one middle post, so she walked to the spare sorting table. The tray of ambiguous pieces held shapes with two inward curves, and she began sorting again; her palm pressed each piece flat, hunting that familiar rhythm. If the tray rocked, a gentle jolt travelled through her wrist, hinting at thicker cardboard underneath. She kept the thicker ones aside and returned to the main table, placing a likely candidate into the open gap. The click sounded perfect and the printed wood grain lined up, but the piece sat higher than its neighbours and rocked inside a bright zone under the lamp.

Margot pressed the centre with one fingertip; it teetered, proving the extra thickness. She lifted it out, exhaled, and scanned the scatter for another with the same outline. York reached for blue sky pieces, their elbows almost crossing, so she shifted her stance and tested each remaining candidate by tapping it lightly against the table. The third attempt lay absolutely flat, and the fence now stretched in an unbroken line toward York’s meadow edge. If she had ignored the difference in height, later pieces would have refused to lie flat. Margot lifted the tray back onto the side table, and behind the tray one rejected impostor piece slipped under the curtain edge unseen.

先前她已照色調粗分過綠色，但那段柵欄仍缺一根中柱，她便走向靠牆的備用桌。那盤「難辨」碎片都是兩內凹造型，她再次篩選；手掌將每塊壓平，尋找熟悉的節奏。若托盤晃動，手腕便感到輕微震動，暗示那片紙板較厚。她把較厚的挑出，帶著可能的候選片回到主桌，把它按進缺口。卡合聲完美，木紋也連接，但那片比鄰片稍高，且在燈下亮區內輕輕搖晃。

瑪歌用指尖壓在中心，感覺它晃動，證明厚度有異。她取出那片，吐出一口氣，掃視桌面剩餘同形狀的碎片。約克正伸手拿天空片，兩人手肘幾乎交叉，她便側身檢測每片，用輕敲方式試厚薄。第三片完全平貼，柵欄線於是無缺地延伸向約克的草地邊緣。若她忽略高度差，之後片子就難以平放。瑪歌把托盤舉回備用桌，托盤後有塊被淘汰的誤混拼圖悄悄滑到窗簾底下，無人察覺。
