The pump plunger dropped with a hollow clang, but the balloon on its nozzle barely expanded. Warm air wheezed back through the loose seal and brushed Vernon’s fingers. He and Yara needed six more spheres before guests arrived, each fixed to a ribbon long enough to reach the ceiling corner. Several balloons had been inflated earlier with just eight neat strokes. Vernon counted the new set aloud—one to eight—then added two more for safety. The latex squeaked under his palm, and Yara twisted the neck with a quick pinch. At the tying station a roll of ribbon lay in a tight knot. Vernon tugged until a plaited loop fell free, giving only sixty centimetres, far short of the required span.

While Vernon searched for the next loop, Yara slipped a blue balloon onto the nozzle. Static lifted stray hair strands like pale tendrils, and the frosting smell drifted from the kitchen, scorching compared with the cooler latex. She pressed the plunger again; the gasket hissed louder, so ten strokes filled the balloon only halfway. Pressed for time, she leaned harder on the handle and squeezed too hard against the stiff column of air. The balloon shot free, spun across the table, and the escaping air whooshed toward the ribbon roll. The sudden gust shoved the roll forward; it bumped a glass tumbler half filled with water. The tumbler rattled against the tabletop, tilted toward the carpet, and cool water sloshed over the rim. Vernon lunged, steadied the glass before it toppled, yet the ribbon now lay another fifty centimetres looser.

With the glass safe, Vernon gathered the freed ribbon, smoothing the damp patch where water had landed. He unwound one final coil; seventy centimetres slipped out with a soft scrape, and the total length finally matched the ceiling height. He knotted the three pieces together, and the joint slid over his thumb, tightening with a faint pop. Yara carried their newest red balloon, treating it as an offering to the bare corner. Vernon climbed the low stool; the plaited line reached, was taped, and six balloons bounced together with gentle rubber thumps. Back at the pump, the cylinder that had clanged so confidently now leaked in tiny puffs. A thin hiss travelled along the silver body, weaving between chair legs and wandering toward the hallway.
