Four index cards lay neatly across the reading table; a fifth waited blank beside Palmer’s uncapped pen. A sweet, faint scent of dried apple drifted from Wren’s snack bowl at the next chair, mixing with the dusty vanilla breath of cloth-bound volumes. The chemistry manual they used smelled almost medicinal despite its pristine cover, and its thin pages seemed to whisper secrets each time Keira turned one. Their assignment asked for hands-on experience, so both friends copied formulas line by line, noses close enough to catch the metallic tang rising from the pen tip. A cool ribbon of air from the ceiling vent lifted a printed call-number slip; its edge brushed Palmer’s wrist. He smoothed the curled corner, cautious not to smear wet ink, while a distant rumor of lemon polish floated from the closing-time cart the librarian rolled past.

A sharp mustard smell suddenly escaped Wren’s jar when its lid popped, and brine splashed onto the carpet. Keira hurried to the supply cupboard for paper towels; Palmer followed to help carry the stack, leaving the table for only a minute. During their absence the vent kept pushing. The loosened slip slid again, nudging the unattended pen. The pen rolled until its barrel tapped Keira’s half-full water bottle; the bottle tipped just enough for condensation to spill. Cool droplets formed a wavering stream, flowed across the wooden surface, and reached the freshly written cards. Ink that had been drying quietly bled outward, forming blue halos, and the cards glided toward the table’s edge.

The pair returned to a faint earthy smell of damp paper. Palmer wedged a thick reference atlas beneath the leaning bottle, lifting it and halting the slow runoff. Keira pressed the wet cards between two drier ones; the blurred portions left cloudy shapes she could still read around. They kept writing, now spacing their notes to avoid the damp patches. A stray current from the vent carried a single paper clip across the table until it landed squarely on the rebellious call-number slip, the small metal arc rocking gently back and forth in the breeze.

兩人回來時聞到潮紙散出的淡淡土腥味。帕默把厚重的地圖冊墊在傾斜的水瓶下，抬高瓶身，阻止了水跡擴大。凱拉把濕卡片夾在兩張較乾的卡片間，暈模的部分仍能勉強讀出。他們繼續抄寫，刻意避開潮斑。出風口吹來的一股氣流托起一枚紙夾，把它送到愛亂動的索書號紙條正中央，小小的金屬弧在氣流中輕輕前後擺動。
