English 原文
Only a palm-deep layer of wheat circled the hopper’s wooden throat, slipping away with each rumbling turn of the stones. Gwen crouched in the grain store corner where sacks leaned against the curved wall, their rough cloth rasping when she pulled the first one forward. The main shaft above groaned like a slow bass drum, and every pulse shook flour from the beam in a soft hiss. She split the sack’s knot with a tug; kernels pattered into a tin scoop, then clattered against the hopper lid. Barely five scoops lifted the grain line two fingers higher—still short of the carved marker that told Ulric the feed would stay steady. The leather belt slapped the guide post in uneven rhythm, and a faint echo floated up the spiral stair.
Gwen dragged a second sack; its bottom scraped over the floor like rocky terrain under thin shoes. A broom toppled when the sack brushed it, and the handle thudded against the belt wedge. The wedge spun away, and the loose belt now flapped in a harsh, hollow beat that drowned the subtle clack of the gears. Gut instinct pushed Gwen toward the tool nook. She grabbed the oak wedge—its surface waxy with oil—and pressed it back between post and belt. The slap changed to a steady thrum. By instinct, her hands returned to the scoop. Seven more scoops joined the earlier five, grain rattling down in short bursts. The line inside the hopper rose, paused, then slid over the marker in one sudden slide as the wind outside surged.
The millstones answered with a deeper hum, and warm flour sifted through the cloth chute in a thicker curtain. On the packing bench—once a dining table in Ulric’s childhood kitchen—the weighing scale rocked gently, its pointer ticking against brass with every floor vibration. Ulric, who had a knack for reading those tiny sounds, glanced over and nodded, yet the rhythm stayed hers to follow. Near her boots, the fallen broom still rolled, its bristles whispering in a slow arc across the powder-covered boards.
