English 原文
"Hand me the clamp."
Sam leaned forward, shoulders tight, and felt the bench edge press into his ribs firmly. He positioned a thin cedar frame around a watercolor landscape of distant landforms, aiming to keep every joint flat and clean. As a novice he had measured twice, and his thumb pressed harder until the nail turned pale. The first squeeze of the screw jaws sent a mild quake through the floorboards beneath his boots. Dust shifted, and the instructor Petra, sharpening a chisel at the pegboard, glanced sideways without pausing her rhythm. Sam breathed out, counting the slow turn of the handle until the frame resisted further movement.
That tremor crept under the drying shelf, where two small beetles slept between strips of curled shavings. The watercolor pads had been stacked carefully by another student, their edges almost perfectly aligned. Startled, they sprang up, wing cases vibrating like drums, lifting them into a loose spiral above the bench. Their sudden flight brushed the uppermost watercolor sheet; the feather-light paper wafted sideways, catching afternoon light as it glided toward the doorway. A young sparrow on the sill jerked away from the drifting sheet, slapped the air, and lurched deeper into the room. The bird’s wings shoved a sudden pocket of air across the wide table toward Sam. The half-set frame slid a few centimeters, its corner scraping against glue already turning stiff.
Sam lunged, shoulders brushing the table edge, and pinned the sliding frame before it could drop onto the floorboards. He had practiced that grip earlier, yet fine shivers ran through his forearms while he eased the wood back into line. With one quick breath he wedged a thin off-cut beneath the corner, blocking further drift the way a pebble halts a wheel. The frame sat skewed by a hair, but its joints still showed the subtlety that revealed Petra’s lesson on balanced pressure. Petra’s inspection would decide later whether his craftsmanship survived the surprise, yet for now the glue could finish setting undisturbed. A light scent of fresh varnish drifted overhead, twisting slowly toward the yard door before thinning into the afternoon heat.
