Sandpaper hissed across a pine strip, each steady stroke flicking fine dust lightly toward Dean’s elbows. Nearby, the instructor tapped a chisel handle against the bench, keeping a soft, even rhythm. He heard the instructor say, "Nice strokes, Dean," before lifting another chisel and returning to the sample piece. A tabby cat traversed the windowsill above them, its paws silent while sun warmed the silver clamp on Dean’s table. Warm air drifted from the open yard door, carrying the faint resin smell of half-dry varnish across the studio. He had already brushed glue along the roof panel and set it flush against the frame’s edge. Heat slipped through the metal; the glue began to quiver, and the joined boards started to falter sideways. Dean cranked the screw tighter, yet abundance of slippery adhesive let the timber creep another few millimetres.

He wiped fresh dust away, pressed again with both palms spread wide, and held the pieces longer before tightening. For a moment the joint stayed put, but warmth continued to seep, and the surface began its slow quiver once more. Dean’s shoulders stiffened from the strain, yet his grip did not falter as small beads of glue slid toward the clamp. He slid a thin scrap under the clamp jaw, hoping the extra thickness would steady the timber during cooling. Meanwhile, the cat hopped down, its whiskers twitching as it sniffed the trembling joint with evident curiosity.

He reached sideways, pulled the yard door nearly closed, blocking the sunbeam; cooler air drifted in and settled over the bench. The temperature drop slowed the glue, letting the boards linger in line while faint floor tremors passed harmlessly beneath them. A curled shaving, loosened by earlier sanding, twirled off the table edge and skated across the smooth floor toward the curious cat.
