English 原文
Gravel crackled under Luke's heel, and a softer crunch replied a pace ahead. Between the two sounds, a dark oval print emerged where the path dipped toward a shaded joint. The mark had been pressed deeply into the damp gravel, as if weight lingered then lifted before drying. Zelda bent low, her ponytail brushing the bright ribbon that fluttered weakly above the junction. Sun glare slid along her wristwatch as she tapped the damp gravel around the mark. The hedges rose on both sides, blocking wind yet letting a thin shaft of light stripe the path. A single skewer with a half-melted marshmallow dangled from Luke’s fingers, swinging like a tiny pendulum with each step.
They walked beside the hedge wall, letting the print trail guide them across two crossings where shadows deepened. At the third junction the marks vanished, and only a faded ribbon lay, its original shade impossible to articulate beneath the glare. Luke crouched, tilting a loose stone so reflected gleam danced across the gravel. Under the angled light, the supposed footprint resolved into a smooth stain left where a gardener’s watering can had rested earlier. The discovery cast doubt on the trustworthiness of every sign they had been following. Luke kept scanning the path for new impressions; Zelda, meanwhile, searched hedge corners for any ribbon she could still trust. Luke straightened, dusting his knees, while Zelda tended the bent twig arrows someone had arranged at the fork. A silent glance passed, and both continued along the brighter corridor that curved toward a thin gleam at roof height.
Soon the central clearing opened, sunlight pouring over the stone bench and pooling shadows beneath the rose arch. The single marshmallow now seemed the only prize for their roundabout stroll, and both held the skewer between them, thumbs grazing. Luke split the sweet in two with a careful twist, placing one sticky half on Zelda's palm and keeping the other. While they chewed, the sundial shadow inched, reminding them that every clue would soon shift again. Zelda flicked the last marshmallow crumb off the sundial, and bees kept weaving bright loops above the hedge tops.
