English 原文
The pine-needle carpet, usually crisp and brittle, sank under Faye’s boot like a soaked sponge, the texture mismatch stealing the expected crunch. She paused inside the narrow pine corridor where trunks rose in straight, cool columns, forming a silent subway of wood beneath the canopy, as if a file of wooden skyscrapers had slipped into the forest. Leander trailed a few paces back, his shoe soles brushing loose grit. At the fork ahead, a tilted marker post leaned sideways; cracked bark flaked off, and a grey crust of lichen buried a yellow triangle. The arrow beneath had been painted bright long ago, yet only dull patches peeked through. Their goal stayed clear: read that triangle and pick the correct branch before light faded. Faye bent, fingernail first. The edge of keratin met the lichen with a dry scrape, shaving away a coin-sized piece and exposing one corner of colour—useful, but nowhere near enough.
She lowered both knees, the packed earth cold and grainy through her trousers, and tried again. A second scrape widened the clean patch to two fingers’ breadth, yet the triangle’s top remained hidden. The gritty growth held fast like clay inside a cooling kiln, brittle yet stubborn. Wind threaded between trunks, brushing her neck with resinous warmth, while Leander traced a loose root that arched above the soil like a miniature scaffold. Faye switched tools; the rounded back of her metal spoon proved more versatile than her nail. One steady push loosened a third strip, almost revealing the whole symbol. She inhaled, cushioned the spoon against the post, and pressed once more. The final crust crumbled, and the triangle burst into full view in one clear moment—the threshold crossed.
As she stood, the post wobbled; the newly clean triangle no longer aimed along either path but straight between them. Dark slots showed where fixing bolts had once bitten, proof the post had twisted in soft soil. Faye gripped the upper edge, eased the wood until the old slots aligned, and the triangle swung left. She released it, brushing chalky crumbs from her palms. A few steps back, pine needles kept dropping from the high branches, tapping the path while she and Leander set off along the real route.
