Holly stepped to the terminal; the fresh slip printed, then curled upward as the vent’s breeze caught its edge. If the stone had been lighter, she could have lifted it easily. Instead, the heavy block seemed determined to stay. While the cat paused nearby, giving an almost empathetic tilt of its head, Holly pressed her palm flat against the limestone. Its cool mass reminded her of cliff rocks she had climbed last spring during the garden’s yearly renewal festival. An idea formed: the very weight that stopped the slip might also tame it.

She swung the block just enough to sandwich the curling paper beneath its front edge. The slip straightened at once, pinned neatly. Holly read the full call number, hurried to an open shelf still lit, and located the volume—a collection of folktales treasured by an older generation of readers. Moments later she returned, lifted the stone only a little, and freed the flattened slip. Holly slid the limestone bookend back to its spot, leaving a pale square of untouched dust on the desk.
