English 原文
Pine sap clung to the air beside the near bank, its sharp sweetness mixing with the damp rope fibres. Otto stood on the grit-warm stepping stone and counted the empty planks, planning two crossings before anyone appeared. Sunlight flashed through each finger-wide gap, scattering a handful of stars across the stream’s shivering ribbon beneath him. A patch of fragrant blooms brightened the far bank, their colours promising a fresh scent once he reached solid ground. With the volunteers silent at their posts, he placed both palms on the coarse hemp and stepped onto the first plank.
Halfway across, the bridge accepted his rhythm like a slow drum, yet the plank before the sagging midpoint dipped deeper than expected. The extra drop sent a jolting wave backward, making the handrails swing outward and scrape against the dense foliage edging the stream. Behind him, shoes rustled on packed earth; a haphazard queue had formed, three new visitors shifting weight while waiting their turn. Otto paused, then pressed one boot down slowly, rolling his heel toward the hollow trunk-sized knot near the edge. The rope frame answered with a softer lift, hinting that spreading his weight across two planks could calm the sway. He shortened his plan to a single trip, deciding the flowers alone were worth collecting before the line grew longer.
Planting each foot over two adjoining boards, he moved again, letting the bridge breathe wider but slower beneath the redistributed weight. The swinging handrails eased within three paces, and the final surge of motion lost itself among ripples below the centre stones. On the far bank, he knelt, dusted hemp fibres from his palms, and leaned toward the blooms he had wanted. Their petals brushed his nose, releasing more pine-sweet air as the bridge behind him swayed under the next walker’s cautious step.
