Behind him, shoes rustled on packed earth; a haphazard queue had formed, three new visitors shifting weight while waiting their turn. Otto paused, then pressed one boot down slowly, rolling his heel toward the hollow trunk-sized knot near the edge. The rope frame answered with a softer lift, hinting that spreading his weight across two planks could calm the sway. Planting each foot over two adjoining boards, he moved again, letting the bridge breathe wider but slower beneath the redistributed weight. The swinging handrails eased within three paces, and the final surge of motion lost itself among ripples below the centre stones. On the far bank, he knelt, dusted hemp fibres from his palms, and leaned toward the blooms he had wanted. Their petals brushed his nose, releasing more pine-sweet air as the bridge behind him swayed under the next walker’s cautious step.
