The space beside the silver pump lay bare, a single green balloon nowhere in sight. Joy bent over the table, fingers brushing the striped cloth as she searched under a loop of ribbon. Theo, already gripping the plunger, paused and lifted the pump to check beneath it. A warm drift of cake frosting rolled in from the kitchen doorway where an adult trimmed fondant with a narrow scalpel, the blade glinting under the ceiling lamp. The pump’s chrome shell caught the same light, throwing a cool reflection across their sleeves. Streamers rustled behind them, and the faint tack of latex touched their palms when Joy finally uncovered the balloon hiding behind the scissors. She held it up, yet Theo’s hand still enclosed the nozzle they both needed.

Each wanted to hurry. Joy aimed to tie clusters before the clock chimed the party hour, while Theo tried to deliver enough air to keep her busy. The pump, however, resisted; its gasket had been worn thinner than they realised, so every stroke hissed and gave only half a breath. They traded the cylinder back and forth in a rhythm that looked like mending fences in a field, arms rising and falling together. After eight strokes a balloon still drooped, its plight wobbling in the cool air. Joy’s fingers, steady as a watchmaker, pinched the neck to stop the slow leak while Theo added two more firm pushes; the plunger rattled once and a pale blue sheen spread over the latex at last.

A sudden squeal announced escape: static tugged three finished balloons off the chair, and they drifted across the floor like a tiny deluge of colour. One bumped the streamer wall and peeled a corner of tape. Theo caught the stray cluster, but the half-inflated balloon on the nozzle sagged immediately. If he let go again, air would pour out, so he wedged the pump between his knees and tugged loose string from the tangled roll. Joy climbed the low stool, pressed the tape flat, and secured the cluster overhead. When she stepped down, they shared a brief nod; four complete clusters now bobbed under the lights. A faint line of powder from the pump’s tired gasket traced a silver arc on the tablecloth.
