Eleven towels lay in neat, silent stacks; eleven more flapped against the metal table whenever the dryer thumped behind Odette. The drum’s deep rumble traveled through the tiled floor, then rose as a hollow tremor inside the handrail. The corridor’s fluorescent tube had been replaced that morning, yet its buzz already drifted between low and high pitch. Odette lined her stacks along the table’s left edge, leaving a narrow boundary for Bea. Bea appeared carrying a basket that rattled with wooden pegs inside a bright plastic pail shaped like a sandcastle. Somewhere above, a mixer beat wet dough, and the dull vibration echoed down the pipes like a slow drum. Warm air hissed from the dryer vent, weaving between their footsteps and fading into the steady corridor echo.

A loose clank from the table leg warned Odette that her stack leaned too far. She pushed the towels inward, and the sliding fabric nudged Bea’s shirts until one sleeve brushed the skate propping the door. Wheels clicked; the door began drifting shut, and a frustrated squeal escaped the hinge before the latch struck metal. Bea, mid-hum, straightened fast as the slam rang around the tiles, and two shirts slid from her basket onto the damp floor. Odette scooped them up, yet her earlier shove had already tipped her towel piles toward the table edge. Tiny droplets now peppered Bea’s cotton, whereas the towels stood dry yet crooked along the vibrating steel.

The ceiling tube flickered twice, plunged the room into a muffled dark, then buzzed back with a harsh electric whine. During the brief gloom, Bea lifted the damp shirts and shook them; droplets tapped the tiles like light rain. If the dryer finished early, both girls could escape the humid room and catch the faint breeze near the stairwell. Together the girls nudged the skate snug against the wall and slid the sandcastle pail beneath the table to claim space. Odette pressed the towel stacks inward; Bea draped the moist shirts over the upturned pail so air could circle them. The new arrangement left towels leaning and sleeves hanging unevenly, yet nothing touched the floor or crossed the shared boundary. A distant intercom chime echoed through the corridor, and Odette was reaching toward the flickering switch while Bea steadied the rattling pail.
