English 原文
A green thermos, a ceramic mug speckled with blue, and a small rubber octopus lay on the sandstone ledge. The ledge had been polished by floods long before the group arrived, and every footstep produced a thud against the hard surface. Odette planned to discover the hidden echo spot, so she edged toward the concave wall while the stream murmured below. First, she whispered a single note toward the smooth curve of sandstone before falling silent. A gust from the wind gap moaned across the bend, drowning the returning syllable beneath a low tremor that rolled along stone. She tried again immediately, yet the wind still drummed, and her own exhale merged with the moan before any echo escaped. Behind her, Warren dunked the octopus into the ankle-deep stream; the toy slapped the water, and pebbles clattered under the splash. The thermos still carried steam from brunch tea, and a trapped drip chimed inside when she set it aside. Odette tapped her foot twice, the rubber sole thudding, yet only muffled fragments bounced back.
She waited through three long breaths until the gust slid away and the canyon fell into a pocket of quiet. Exactly then, she raised one hand; Warren froze, holding the soaked toy motionless so the disturbed water could sink back to calm. Odette whispered once more, but a pebble, released belatedly by the stream, rattled against another and muddied the delicate rebound. Refusing to move position, she adjusted instead to the rhythm around her, waiting half a heartbeat after her breath left her lips. This tiny delay let the canyon breathe first, and her next whisper slipped into the hollow between water murmur and distant wind. A bright duplicate of her syllable curved from the concave wall, crossed the ledge, and arrived sharp enough for Warren to grin. The success was partial, yet unmistakable; a second bounce lingered weaker, then scattered into faint ticking along unseen corridors of stone. Below, the octopus drifted free of Warren’s grip, bobbed once, and floated downstream with soft bumps against shifting pebbles. At the canyon entrance, a canyon wren struck the air with a staccato chirp. Fractured versions of the call chased one another down the twisting passage, layering over Odette’s fading whisper.
