English 原文
The upstream surface lay mirror-flat, but water squeezed glittering and quick through the arm-span gap between two fixed boulders. Tara knelt on the cool clay bank, boots pressing grooves in the mud, and slid a thin slate slab across the current toward the opening. The slab had been angled too low; the stream caught its edge, jerked it free, and smacked it downstream. A startled water strider skipped aside, its sudden dash rippling toward a silvery minnow that darted from the shade of a larger stone. The minnow’s tail brushed a cherry-red pebble on the bed, rolling it against Tara’s half-built wall and punching a fresh hole. Above the hiss, the creek kept a quiet, conversational rhythm, as though commenting on her fumble.
She rose and walked to the driftwood pile, tugging a pale branch loose from the tangle. Bark flaked away, exposing smooth fibers that flexed when bent; she tried fitting the branch between two other rocks, found it too short, and set it aside. Farther along the bank, thin sheets of shale jutted from the wall; she snapped one free, noticing how layers separated like pages. A dragonfly hovered nearby, wings humming beside another of its kind, their brief camaraderie ending when breeze disturbed their balance. At a shallow bend, she pressed a damp, veined leaf against a notebook page to commemorate the shifting light patterns across its surface, then waited while the print darkened. Pebbles clicked under slow water, but the slate slab remained out of sight and out of mind.
Passing the dam again, she spotted the same slab drifting in a lazy circle against a swirl. Without planning, her hand dipped, caught it by the sharper end, and lifted it clear. The weight felt familiar yet lighter, perhaps because clay dust no longer coated its sides. She eased the stone flush against the boulders, tilting it higher so the current slid over rather than under. The flow thinned, and excess water slipped harmlessly along the far bank, halting the earlier chain of ripples. At the far bend a pair of ducks paddled upstream, their ripples sliding in widening rings across the steel-blue pool.
