English 原文
A thin hiss escaped the packed earth like water on hot iron. The sound left a darker oval stain above the opening—fresh steam marked its path before the breeze tore it away. Kent crouched beside the food prep table where banana leaves flutter in the back-lit draught, their edges catching the glare that leaked from gaps between kiln blocks. Rows of onions had been wrapped in leaf bundles and placed aside, their shadowed forms rising like low hills. An older sibling, Ulric, leaned on a board across two buckets, watching the dome. No one spoke; ash drifted in a pale ribbon above the fire-raking zone. A plastic container of wet soil waited near Kent’s boots, but his gaze stayed on the faint glow that pushed through hair-thin cracks. Nothing around seemed to announce a problem, yet that sudden hiss kept repeating, softer each time, pulling his attention from the sorted piles of potatoes.
Only when Ulric stepped toward the bench did Kent notice a thin line of brightness along the mound’s crown. A crack had opened, wide enough for steam to slip out and steal heat. The bottom layer of potatoes required every degree inside, so Kent set a palm two centimetres above the gap. Warm air rose steadily. He shoveled one small scoop from the container onto the glowing slit; the soil dulled the light but wisps still found a way through. A second scoop followed, pressed flat with the edge of the board; brightness shrank to a flicker, yet a pulse of vapour fluttered free like a tiny flag. Kent filled the board again, and he had stamped the heap firm with both boots; the instant his weight met the spot, the glow vanished altogether and the mound went matte.
Luminance around the kiln evened out, nothing more than dim shapes under the late sky, and the hiss fell silent. Kent hovered his hand once more; rising air felt gentler now, so he returned the spade to the earth supply pile. A stray beam from the yard light brushed across the soil he had trampled. Something smooth reflected the gleam inside the emptied container. He tilted it, and a blue plastic narwhal no larger than his thumb slid forward and bumped his knuckle—perhaps dropped during digging, now rescued by chance. Kent lifted the tiny narwhal slowly toward the light above.
