Remembering the stream’s constant shimmer on the opposite side, Yves pressed a straight stick into the soil as a tool, aligning its thin shadow toward the water’s sparkle. If the wind changed, the map would fly farther, but the shadow would stay honest. They compared stick and needle; the metal pointer bent away from the shadow line only on this strip of grass. Two strides east cleared the hidden influence, and the compass realigned with the stick’s dark guide. Following that paired check, they located marker stone five half-buried under dappled light where moss met firm ground.

A squirrel on a branch above the stream twitched its tail, dropped a fragment of bark through a shaft of light, and sprinted along the high limb toward deeper shade.
