York, standing beside the rinse bucket, arranged unused sponges by size, their stiff edges ticking softly against the table. The chase lasted moments, yet the sun pressed forward; by the time they returned, the soapy wash basin stood lower, and the thin rinse water inside the bucket had grown cloudy. On the tabletop, faint streaks had already appeared where wet patches met drying air, and a torn crumb of green scouring pad clung stubbornly to one tile.

Ivy had cleaned in wide sweeps before the ball interrupted them; now she switched order and worked in quick bursts. She plunged the dense kitchen sponge first into the rinse bucket, squeezed it into an empty glass bowl that served as a temporary receptacle, then waited three heartbeats so the dripping paused before crossing the floor. The timing kept the drip path drier, and the clearer water inside the bowl spared the main vessel from more soap. As she pressed the sponge over the tabletop, the missing green pad slipped free from a slit within the yellow pores. Ivy lifted the sponge once more, water still arcing toward the tile below.
