The painted sill felt warm under Sam’s fingertips as he steadied the drinking glass three-quarters full of water. He wanted the rainbow band on the floor to reach a sheet of blank paper lying exactly two hand-spans away. The gap was clear: each hand-span measured fifteen centimetres, while the coloured edge stopped at ten. Sam folded a strip of card, slid it under the glass’s outer rim, and watched the spectrum crawl five centimetres farther. One card alone was not enough, but the first partial gain shimmered brightly across the boards.

Sunlight heated the near side of the glass, and a slow convection spiral lifted the warmer water. That swirling change nudged tiny bubbles, and the rainbow drifted again, missing the paper by the width of a pencil. Condensation formed, a cool trickle winding down to the sill. Sam wiped the damp patch, then folded a second and a third card. The three layers, now ten millimetres thick, had been stacked like miniature steps. He pressed an eraser against the glass for extra leverage and tilted it a fraction. The base rocked, found equilibrium, and in that instant the full stripe leapt the remaining distance, flooding the waiting page with violet at one edge and deep red at the other.

A hazy secondary band flared when the moving water refracted through the descending bubbles—an unintended discovery that widened Sam’s eyes like a curious young scientist. If the sun shifted any farther, the colours would slip beyond reach, so he wedged the eraser firmly to lock the angle. Across the room, Zelda turned a page of her novel; the paper whispered as her elbow rose and fell in a slow rhythm.
