English 原文
Gwen eased the bamboo stylus from its copper cup, and a thin sigh rose as liquid wax slid onto the waiting cotton strip. Beeswax popped in quiet bursts inside the warming pan, while the distant wash stream sent a steady murmur against pebbles. A violet halo already darkened around the previous line, proof that yesterday’s dip had reached deep into the fibre. She had clipped the fresh strip beside it on the oxidation clothesline; the dowels had been roughened by seasons of dripping dye and replied with a low groan each time the wind pressed them. Scrap cotton from the zero waste basket muffled the table edge, and she kept the stylus upright out of respect for the careful pattern— a curve copied from an ancestor’s sash.
Metal rang beyond the courtyard wall; something in the alley struck a tin lid. The sharp clang startled a stray cat, paws drumming over flagstones. Its dash brushed a pile of scattered grain, and sparrows burst upward with frantic wingbeats. The sudden flutter rocked the clothesline; half-oxidised strips slapped together, wet centres meeting in a sticky kiss before swinging apart. Blue tinged water spattered onto Gwen’s cooling wax, and the stylus clogged at once, the next drop of wax freezing at the tip like a bead of amber. She stepped back, hearing her own breath rasp against the fermenting hiss that rose from the indigo vat.
She lowered the stylus into the warming pan, letting the quiet bubble loosen the blockage, then reached for the nearest swaying strip. Its inner area, still golden, now showed blotches where cloths had touched. Rather than fight the new marks, she folded the fabric lengthwise and dipped only the edge through the vat’s silent skin. Capillary wicking drew dye up the fold; a soft fizz sounded as excess indigo dripped away, creating a darker border that would frame the random blotches. The cat had already vanished, but a single sparrow swooped back, tugged a loose thread from the folded cloth, and darted toward the roof with wings whirring across the afternoon light.
