Lily’s shoulders tightened; she fetched the long-handled rake, balanced its weight above the spray, and teased the wet bundle free. The loosened clump drifted downstream, but ripples kept spinning inside the depression, haggling over every droplet like shopkeepers at closing time. She nudged the sluice board higher, allowing extra flow toward the garden so the opposing stream could barter kinetic energy with the swirling pocket. Wood groaned beneath the shifting pressure, the stick steadied midway, and Lily kept leaning against the board.
