Switching to the 600-grit, Joy worked longer strokes, but the strip’s brittle corner caught a knot and snapped, leaving a delicate zigzag tear that shortened it by half. She checked the pegboard—only the single 800-grit remained. At this pace it would never cover all four faces. She lifted the block, careful to grasp only the unsanded edges, and carried it to the touch-test shelf. The reference block there felt smooth as polished shell, yet her own piece still showed faint circles where the foam backing pressed unevenly. Petra slid the lamp closer again; Joy’s shoulders eased, and a small, grateful breath passed her lips, then escaped with the sawdust toward the floor.

Back at the bench Joy chose a smaller goal. She folded the torn length, creating a fresh edge, and spent her remaining passes on the top face alone. The shortened strip wore down quickly, but the surface beneath it brightened from dull grey to honey. When she wiped away the dust with the soft brush, that single plane reflected the lamp, while the other sides waited rough and pale. Joy dipped a fingertip into Petra’s oil and rubbed a thin coat across the finished face; the wood darkened to amber, leaving one shining rectangle against the raw pine as the first evening cricket began its slow rhythm beyond the patio.
