English 原文
Half a roll of coarse sandpaper had vanished before Forrest noticed the knot that lay like a small whirl in the pine block clamped on the rubber-lined bench. He drew another strip from the pegboard, its grit rough as dried tide-washed stone, and pressed both palms down. Each stroke rasped through his shoulders; a fine, warm dust drifted toward a waiting tray. A planter beyond the patio released a quiet blossom scent, and a tabby cat watched from the railing, tail swinging for balance. Forrest’s apron, speckled with spots the shape of a giraffe’s patches, twitched as the strip snagged the hidden knot and tore. The coarse sheet had been shredded by the swirl before he could finish the face, leaving splinters of cardboard on the mat. He tried shorter strokes, wrists stiff, yet the next strip frayed along the same groove, offering only more dust and irritation.
While Nina oiled a finished shelf nearby, the vice jaw slipped under Forrest’s last push, and the block pivoted. Corners no longer lined up; one face sat thinner, and his earlier progress vanished. If the wedge slipped, the block would spin again, so he grabbed a spare cedar wedge from the tool tray and tapped it beneath the lumber, feeling resistance settle through his elbows. After brushing away the sawdust, he switched to a medium grit, then carried the piece toward the touch-test zone. The cat darted across his path; he shifted weight quickly, and a loose tide of powder slid off the block, pattering onto the mat. At the shelf he compared surfaces against the smooth reference block, then dabbed a hint of linseed oil on one corner. A pale ellipse appeared, marking a hidden scratch that curved like a tiny cove beside the stubborn knot; further sanding would be needed before any fine strip could be trusted. Behind him, the cat sneezed into the settling dust, and a warm nutty aroma lingered under the patio roof.
