Paloma yanked the heavy bucket of loose soil across the grass, boots scraping near the smoking kiln mound. The adult had raked the fire out minutes earlier, and the sealed heap now breathed pale steam through a jagged gap. The smoke carried a sharp mineral tang mixed with the sweet note of corn silk, making her tongue feel dusty. Only one spare block remained within reach, yet the heat had warped its sides into a wavy, uneven profile. She gripped the stick and tried to push that block over the vent; instead it rocked, hissed, and let steam undulating upward. Each rocking slap sounded like a witty response to her effort, as though the dome mocked every careful shove. When she eased the stick away, the gap still glowed orange, and sweet earthy smell drifted toward the observation bench.

She shifted her footing to try again, but loose ash in the fire-raking zone gave way and her boot began to plunge. The ground beneath that zone had been softened by falling embers, so her boot stopped only when the thicker soil resisted. A metallic tang hung over the ash, unlike the earlier soil smell, hinting that the clay beneath held fiercer heat. As she steadied herself, the bucket rolled and its rim struck the warped block, flipping it like a coin. The flipped position showed a shallow hollow in its belly — the very curve that had stalled her efforts moments earlier. She lifted the block with the stick again; this time the hollow faced upward, ready to cradle extra soil. She shoveled the scattered earth into that cradle, its weight pressing warped edges tight while steam thinned to a faint sigh. Finally she walked the stomping circle, packing every step, until only a whisper of scent slipped through a hairline seam. Around the base, a thin ring of lighter soil drifted outward, shifting gently each time the afternoon breeze passed.
