English 原文
Cold beads rolled along the smooth plastic bottle against Max's fingers as he stepped onto the entry corridor. Harriet walked beside him, her trainers sinking slightly into the silver-grey gravel that answered each footfall with a dry crunch. Their shared goal was simple: find the central clearing before the sun drifted past the maze's tallest hedges. At the first junction a faded ribbon hung, once vibrant crimson, now almost the colour of the lavender beside it. Its once bright dye had been slowly bleached by many months of strong sunlight over the hedge wall. Max's first attempt relied on that ribbon, so he turned left without hesitating at the fork. He carefully marked the choice by pressing a flat, grey stone deep into the loose path. A distant electric buzz, probably the landscaper's hedge trimmer, fluttered through the walls and then vanished.
A few minutes later, the warm, still air inside the corridor wrapped around the chilled bottle and made it sweat even more. Clear droplets began to plummet from its base onto the dust-grey gravel in irregular, shining taps. Each splash darkened a small circle, and together they traced a damp ribbon that curved away from the flat stone. Within that ribbon a restless, dark line gradually formed in the space between two larger pebbles. An ant patrol surfaced from beneath the hedge, following the moisture like scouts on new ground. Their tiny bodies pushed loose pebbles aside until the arrow Max had set looked more like a crooked triangle. Harriet crouched, lifting her eyebrows high, and pointed at the slow rearrangement without daring to disturb the insects. The misleading shape threatened to send the next choice straight into a dead-end alcove lined with red salvia.
Max slowly slid the cool bottle back into his backpack to halt the steady drip. He scraped a slender branch along the gravel to erase the broken arrow and smooth the path. With his strategy now changed, he lifted his eyes toward the hedge tops, stretching onto his toes for a clearer view. High above, bees circled the sun-facing flowers, a silent compass that firmly placed true south to the right. He beckoned with a quick nod, and together they walked along the cooler right-hand corridor toward the lookout corner. Behind them the ant trail was already breaking apart, pebble by pebble, as the bright gravel dried. Behind them, one last ant dragged a bright crumb across the freshly smoothed surface, tracing a wavering line toward the hedge base.
