Sticky foam had climbed a thumb’s width above the metal line scratched earlier during washing. A faint vibration passed through the ladle, like a small leap of trapped air escaping the deep mixture. Tiny sugar grains dotted the spoon’s handle, forming an intriguing ridge that pressed against his thumbpad. The timer had been reset twice already, yet the glossy surface still released occasional wet plops against the sides.

As the steam thinned, Hector slid a chilled saucer from the freezer and dotted it with a drop of jam. The liquid spread quickly, offering no wrinkle when he nudged it; that clue showed the set remained too loose.
