English 原文
The blanket’s fabric felt cool under Quinn’s palm, yet the stitching along its edge burned with left-over sunlight. Viola adjusted her seat at the downhill corner, and a thick textbook on oceanography perched beside the wicker basket like an obedient brick. Quinn’s simple goal was space; two plates needed a flat spot. The book pressed a diagonal ridge into the cloth, so every plate rocked. Quinn had already tried to slide the volume aside, but its weight dragged the blanket and the ridge deepened instead of smoothing.
A breeze crossed the park; leaves rustled, and distant laughter broke against the slope like small waves. Just then the dog sprang toward a squirrel. The leash jerked the basket, the basket nudged a plastic cup, and the cup, in turn, toppled a berry bowl. Berries rolled, slowed, and finally rested against Viola’s ankle, while a trickle of juice spread in a faint blue-grey sheen. The cup had been knocked sideways by the shifting basket, yet the heavy book stayed planted, still creating that stubborn ridge.
Quinn lunged, caught the leash, and noticed the textbook’s flat spine. In a single motion, the book was tipped upright and wedged beneath the basket handle, pinning the leash between paper and wicker. The same mass that made the ridge now locked the basket in place; the dog’s next tug barely moved the cloth. If the book had been lighter, the basket would have slid all the way down the slope. With the anchor set, Quinn wiped the spilled juice and pushed the freed plates into the newly stable uphill space. Viola lifted a napkin saved from a cousin’s wedding and dabbed the berries, while the dog sniffed the immobilised handle, tail still tapping. A single green apple continued its slow journey along the diagonal ridge, unseen by either of them.
