English 原文
Seven neat chalk strokes ringed the faded compass rose, yet an eighth lingered unfinished where Sam paused beside the vane. Rain-washed planks breathed earthy sap while a metallic tang from bearing grease drifted around his nose with each lazy swirl of air. The vane stood frozen five degrees off north; light wind nudged it, yet the arrow refused to swing free. That sticky hesitation formed the morning’s first obstacle, and Griffon merely watched, keeping the steady railing between them and the open sky. Sam slid a narrow wooden ruler from his pocket, an earlier innovation for flicking dust off stubborn joints without scratching metal. He tapped the vane; the arrow twitched yet stayed crooked, as though warped fin and weak breeze held a silent bond. Cloud shadows slid west, but Sam only chalked half a fresh guide line before the centre plank let out a low groan.
A sudden shrill whistle rose from the stairwell below, carrying sweet milky steam scented with crushed nutmeg. Griffon lifted an eyebrow toward the smell, so Sam followed, leaving the half-marked compass and sticky vane behind. In the recording room, the kettle rocked, spattering spiced foam across the warmer wooden floor. They slid it aside, wiped the droplets, and that cosy aroma drifted after them while they climbed the steps. During those brief minutes away, cloud shadows had swung north-east and the flag’s fabric now bellied against a fresh current. On the deck the vane no longer sulked; stronger wind forced the warped fin straight, and arrow, flag, clouds showed unification. Sam’s earlier guide lines pointed nowhere, yet the sharper gust offered a chance to secure a clear reading.
Rain-damp freshness mingled with the spicy trace from downstairs, forming a curious unification of wood, metal, and kitchen memory around his lips. Brass studs caught a pale glint as cloud light brightened, and the anemometer’s hum rose into a thin, sugary whine. He gripped the ruler like a baton, waited for the whirring cups to steady, and was reaching toward the pole.
