English 原文
Warm whey steam and damp limestone struck Jonas's nose as he dipped a copper ladle into the spring-fed basin. A shallow groove inside the pot showed the fill line that had to be reached. His first lift poured a clear ribbon; the level crept halfway toward the groove before settling. He dipped again, his arms steady like a lumberjack guiding a saw through a length of soft pine. The second ribbon of water raised the line to two thirds, glinting under the amber lamp above the basin. Through the doorway, a verdant slope speckled with a boulder field shone; a newborn kid bounced between gray rocks. Nearby, Oona counted shelf rows aloud, her voice low so the cave humidity stayed even.
Jonas drew the final ladle, but the chilled water dripped fast from its rim, stealing volume before he tipped it in. The surface still lay a finger below the groove, so he scooped a handful of icy liquid straight from the slow trickle. The basin’s iron spout had been forged decades earlier in a valley workshop, and continuous flow kept its tip bright. Drops slid from his knuckles, yet enough stayed inside his cupped palm to bridge the tiny gap. As the water met the rest, the meniscus lifted at once and kissed the groove, unlocking the pot’s quiet task. He stirred in coarse salt; the grains swirled, then dissolved, leaving a cloud that drifted upward on warmer air from cheese. Vapor met the cool lamp guard, turned into beads, and one slid off, dropping onto a chalk slate below. The droplet smudged yesterday’s turning numbers, exposing paler stone where no mark remained beneath the chalk.
A striped cat that had been tracing mold scents along the shelf sprang toward the slate, its paw catching the wooden frame. The sudden jolt tilted the board aside, and the next bead fell harmlessly onto the floorstone instead of more chalk. Jonas steadied the slate while Oona stepped in, her fingertips hovering above the blurred figures. He lifted the slate to the light; she held the damp cloth, fine gray streaks spreading through its weave. Water streaks kept crawling along the cloth fibres while chalk dust flaked from the slate in Jonas’s steady hands.
