English 原文
A dry rasp scratched across the folding table as Josie drew sandpaper under a hard rear tire. Clutching a small screwdriver, she slipped the tire back onto the axle and listened to the motor’s thin whine while the car balanced on her palm. Track time rotated in strict logistics, and the next opening at the start gate was close, so she hurried. The high-speed gears had been installed, yet the last lap showed a wobble on the banked curve; a blue-grey scuff still marked the outer rail. Confetti from yesterday’s surprise party lay like paper flakes near the pit stop mark, one piece already stuck to a ventilation slit. She flicked it away, placed the car on the launch pad, and waited for the supervisor’s nod.
The gate dropped. The car shot forward, whine rising, but the uphill stole speed and another tap-tap sounded on the curve. Josie leaned closer, ready to adjust, when a metallic scrape burst from the hall entrance. A trolley loaded with folded chairs had tipped, and the adult supervisor signalled everyone to help. Chairs began to shuffle across the floor as volunteers pushed them upright, and Josie stepped away, leaving her tools spread across the bench. The interruption lasted less than a minute, yet the warm lights above kept softening the track. Returning, she noticed the outer lane gap now wide enough to catch a fingertip. She released the car anyway. The front weight hit the gap, popped free, and slid downhill over a strip of silver confetti. The loose piece struck her row of spare soft tyres, nudged three of them in turn, and the rolling rings tumbled toward the straight.
Josie’s elbow dipped across the rail, blocking the first tyre; the others slowed against her sleeve and stopped. Rubber scent hovered. She began to piece together a fix: the freed weight was pressed farther back, softer tyres replaced the hard set, and the body shell stayed off for cooling. The battery had been half-used, yet its gentler output matched the grippier wheels. The rotation bell chimed, and she rolled the rebuilt car to the gate, calm despite the adjusted plan. At the next table, Pierce’s cloth circled his blue-grey shell in steady arcs, catching and releasing the overhead light each time it moved.
