English 原文
Slim scissors already tapped at the glue station; Fleur trimmed a faded ear for her stuffed rabbit. An adult stood nearby, vigilant yet silent, sorting shiny gears into small piles on the waiting shelf. Reese set his wooden truck on the padded cloth, careful not to disturb her metal clamps. He needed the tiniest spare wheel, and one lay ready beside a loose rubber band. The wheel fit the axle, yet its rim scraped the fender at every quarter turn during the slow trial spin. A shallow groove had been carved by an earlier owner long ago, leaving the edge slightly uneven. Reese lifted a child-safe file, and hazelnut-scented shavings sheared away, drifting across the warm cloth. After three patient passes a brighter ring began to emerge, yet the wheel still caught. Tiny ridges on the axle had worn smooth over years of play, so every fraction of width counted.
Reese turned the truck sideways and, using shorter strokes, began to whittle an even finer strip. This time he pressed the file closer to the rim, letting cloth between fingers and wood absorb the heat. When he spun the wheel again it turned cleanly, then shot down the ramp and across the padded cloth. It tapped a tiny beetle resting near the rubber clamp, and the jolt sent the insect racing toward the lamp. The beetle’s dash made a resting ladybug lift into sudden flight, and its wings brushed the lamp’s arm. The heavy head dipped toward the uncapped glue bottle until Reese’s left hand guided the arm back into balance. Thin scratches on the ramp had darkened, a quiet record of each earlier slow test slide. He placed the truck where it had started, and the wheel now traced quiet circles, widening the groove each time it passed.
