English 原文
Wood groaned under Viola’s sandals, its low tone sliding along the dock like a slow drum. She stood in the mid-dock shade, where willow leaves threw olive patches over the water and the float bobbed. Zander knelt at the shore equipment area, pressing a fresh worm onto his hook with steady thumbs. Viola’s first cast had landed short; loose coils in the line dragged the bait back toward the posts. She drew the rod tip high, stripped loops into neat rows, and tried again with smoother motion. The float arced farther this time, sending a bright overture of ripples toward the darker willow roots. Below, green fronds on the mooring post swayed, and the boards answered with a dry discourse of creaks. Only eight worms waited in the tin; each miss would shorten the twilight window that fish favored.
A sudden splash beside the shore equipment area broke the quiet rhythm of casting as a stray dog bounded through shallow water. Its paws drummed across the mud, nosing at the lunch bag that lay open near Zander’s folded chair. Viola anchored her rod in a groove between planks, then both friends hurried to chase the curious animal away. By the time the dog trotted into the reeds, minute waves had started rocking the unattended dock end. When Viola returned, her float had drifted under the rope-wrapped post, and the line looped twice around wet wood. Sun had edged beyond the willow, so her own shadow now lay straight across the snag, deepening the tangle.
Zander stepped onto the mooring-post side, the plank there curled upward like parchment where heat had dried the grain. He lifted Viola’s rod high, keeping tension steady, while she crouched and fed the line carefully beneath the rough rope. Each small pull tested the knot memory; the coils gave little by little until the float swung free with barely a sound. A crayfish slid from a burrow beside the post, its shell catching amber light, then vanished under waving weeds. They recast together: Zander steadied the rod butt, Viola guided the line, and the bait landed beyond the shadow strip. Twilight thickened over the water, yet a single ring spread where the float now trembled farther out. A mild warmth clung to the upturned parchment-like plank beside Viola’s knee, and the feeling stayed even after her hand rose.
