Wave Against the Stone-

English 原文
A thin hiss slipped from the whetstone each time Kit drew the garden scissors across its damp surface. Behind the bench, Ella watched, her hands sorting tools on the pegboard while quietly ensuring his grip stayed clear of the edge. The worn wood under Kit’s elbows felt ridged, and droplets clung to his sleeves where grey slurry had spattered. Each firm stroke sent a small tremor through the bench, and the neighbour’s pruning shears edged forward, tapping the trough corner. He noticed the stone darken as water pooled in its concave middle, while the edges turned a pale frigid grey. The bench, once kept for leisure between planting seasons, now shivered with steady work as the hiss rose and fell. Outside the awning, a tiny turret on the shed roof caught sleet, and pellets rattled against its tin sides.
An unexpected clang cut through the rhythm. A rusty lawn ornament, shaped like an anchor, had toppled against the bucket stool beside the herb bed. Ella stepped toward the noise, lifting the anchor upright, and Kit followed to steady the sun-warmed bucket before it slipped. Sleet thickened in the breeze, stinging their knuckles. They looped a rope around the ornament and tied it to a post, then hurried back under the awning. During those short steps, a new chain had begun on the bench. The neighbour’s shears had slid the final centimetre and knocked the ladle; the ladle flipped, sending warm water over the stone. Slurry streaks spread outward, painting the trough walls darker.
Slurry now swam across the trough, thinner and glassy. The blade skated without grip and squealed each time the edge met the water-coated stone. A light groove had been carved into the scissors where an earlier stroke had jumped across the hidden crack. Kit caught the wandering shears and wedged the folded drying cloth beneath their handle, halting the bench vibrations. He decided against another rinse. Instead, he gathered a fingertip of watery paste and brushed it along the whetstone as a fine polish. The lighter pressure curved the edge smoothly, and a narrow silver line replaced the wide reflection along the metal. If the shears slide again, the cloth will block their path. Around the whetstone’s darkened centre, diluted slurry spiralled toward the trough lip and continued to drift downstream.
