English 原文
The sky-blue tissue felt sandy against Raine’s knuckles, even after he brushed away the floury dust floating above the paste bucket that breathed out a sour, vinegar-sharp smell.
Damp air swirling near the wide doorway gave every breath a mix of crushed carnation sweetness and metallic tang from cut wire. Sable balanced on a safety step beside the trailer, holding a panel already dotted with rose-scented paste, while Raine compared two shades of blue beneath the doorway light. One carried a faint detergent smell; the other released almost no scent at all. The difference showed the seam running crooked. He peeled away the stronger-smelling squares, and the dried paste underneath cracked like old bread crust. Thicker paste was needed, so he dragged the nearest bucket closer; its weight made the wooden stick bend, but persistent stirring thinned the paste despite its initial resistance. The bucket left a damp trail scented like wet flour across the concrete, sweeping through the chalk guideline that had marked the join between blue and gold sections.
A dusty chalk smell rose as Raine crouched, seeing the border half-erased under the paste streak. Without that line, the golden side might creep into the blue when the next team arrived. He had already secured the corrected blue seam, yet the smudged border threatened the shared pattern. Raine wished he had saved more untouched chalk, because the spare pieces now lay beyond the ladders beside a tray of anemone heads giving off a faint tide-pool note. Instead of fetching new sticks, he snapped a short, cautious step backward, pressed the bucket’s rim onto the floor, and rolled it along the intended path. The wet rim printed a faint stripe of paste that smelled sweet and yeasty; he dusted it quickly with ground cinnamon from the decoration table, turning the stripe into a visible tan divider. The improvised band was uneven, yet it marked the seam clearly enough.
A minute later, a sudden inland squall funneled through the doorway, carrying the peppery scent of distant rain and rattling tissue layers on both sides of the float; the cinnamon-coated stripe stayed firm while the blue seam held its corrected line, though small flecks of tan paste dotted the concrete beyond. The mingled smell of cinnamon, wet paste, and rain-tinged air drifted in the shed long after the gust passed.
