A dented ladle, a half-open paint can, and a stack of wire spools clinked against each other on the supply table beside Oscar. The flat slap of Ben’s staple gun echoed from the float’s wooden truss, while the roof sheets above responded with a soft ripple of metallic clicks. Oscar’s goal sounded simple: keep the paste smooth enough for blue tissue squares (element A) yet leave the chalk border on the floor sharp for the gold section (element B). He stirred, and air bubbles burst with wet pops; the thickened paste resisted every turn. One more splash of water would end the strain inside the bucket, he thought. The ladle dipped, water hissed in, and the mixture loosened with a relieved slurp. A brief vacillation of pitch in the stir confirmed that element A was now workable.

A quiet drip followed the success, then another. The added water had trickled over the rim, pattering onto the concrete and smudging the pale chalk line that guided Ben’s side. The loss of that guide increased the tension between blue and gold sections; voices around the shed dimmed as shoes scraped to avoid the spreading puddle. Oscar knelt, chalk nub in hand, but the wet patch refused to take the powder. Redrawing here would only grind paste into the floor. He shifted instead, sliding a folding board beneath the damp spot with a dry rasp. The board offered a temporary bridge, leaving just enough untouched space for a thinner replacement line.

When the scrape of chalk finally resumed, the mark emerged lighter than before yet visible. Ben crouched opposite, pressing a fresh square of tissue that matched Oscar’s line; each segment met the other, one side brighter, the other margin faint. Oscar held the nearly empty chalk stick between two fingers, and Ben balanced the still-thick paste bucket by its handle; both examined their split result under the tin roof’s lingering ring.
