Idris hoped to lift the cairn one layer higher, so he eased the flat stone onto the top. A gust burst through the hedge gap, flipped the newcomer sideways, and the entire structure tipped. Pebbles clacked against his boots before rolling downhill. Dinah stepped from the sorting boulder with another candidate balanced in her palm, sleeve brushing sage leaves. Idris gathered the spilled stones, turning each to feel for the flattest face, then tried again. This time he aligned the bottom piece so its broad edge gripped the packed earth, yet another blast met the placement; the renewed structure shivered but held a breath longer. Dinah slid beside him, knees dusty, and cupped the upper layers, fingers forming a living clamp while Idris adjusted the angles by millimetres. When her wrists tired, she shifted to stand cross-wise, blocking the wind. The tiny change bought time. An unexpected swirl of tawny grit—no wider than a hat—whirled up the path like a playful tornado and rattled loose gravel against their boots. Dust peppered their cheeks, yet the cairn, now six stones tall, remained upright in quiet defiance. Idris exhaled; warmth lingered in his palms where sun-soaked quartz had pressed, and faint tingling traced the skin of each fingertip.
