English 原文
Rainwater had lingered on the polished corridor since the late-morning break, leaving cool streaks that made shoes slide. A small olive toad clambered across the slick surface, its bumpy back against the glassy wax like sand on ice. Kent paused at the supply-closet door, the metal handle cold against his palm, while Ruby’s footsteps tapped in synchronized rhythm farther down the hall. Together they watched the creature hop toward a narrow floor drain running like a shallow trench beside the skirting, a line that copied the concrete drainage ditch visible through the open window. Tiny splashes sent gritty dust outward, then the bell rang again and both students turned back to their tasks.
Kent’s next move seemed routine: collect a fresh ream of paper before the class resumed. The sliding door, however, refused to budge. A cardboard carton of outdated worksheets lay wedged across the rail; its edges felt blunt yet its weight pressed solidly against his shins. His diligent efforts to shove it aside failed because a ribbon of water, drawn from the window gap, had left the floor slippery. That same damp ribbon had attracted the roaming toad. A second heave shifted the carton only a finger’s width, then it jammed again. He wished he had noticed his soft-soled shoes earlier. While steadying himself, Kent realised the carton’s flat side matched the height of the metal track. With one controlled pivot he tipped the heavy box upright; its mass now pinned the loose rail downward, working like a rough floodgate that blocked more water and, at the same time, freed the door. The panel slid open on its smooth groove, and the stacked paper inside remained dry.
Hours later, long after the final bell, corridor lights dimmed to their night glow. The puddles had shrunk to pale marks, stopped earlier by the makeshift barrier. By evening, the toad lingered beside the grate under the silent floodgate.
